Virtual Exercise Program Details

Participating in the Survivors Uniting for Remote Guided Exercise (SURGE) study helps researchers understand the impact of live, online group-based exercise classes compared to recorded exercise sessions for increasing physical activity levels, improving physical fitness and quality of life, and reducing loneliness. Our goal is to inform online physical activity and exercise programs for cancer survivors.

Who can be part of the SURGE study?

People 18 years of age or older who have been diagnosed with any type of cancer within the past 5 years and who have completed primary treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation). You must also be doing less than 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise —for example, brisk walking, light cycling, water aerobics, or pickleball—and not have any medical reasons that would make exercise unsafe, such as uncontrolled heart conditions, severe shortness of breath, or upcoming major surgery.

How does the study work?

We are looking at the impact of remote guided exercise to help individuals living with and beyond cancer increase physical activity, increase quality of life, and reduce loneliness. If you participate, you will be randomly placed into one of two guided exercise groups. We will ask you to complete online fitness assessments and surveys as well as wear a physical activity monitor device and watch a few times throughout the study.

The study will take place 100% remotely and all study activities will be completed online.
